Max tokens and cost
Definition and example
Max tokens and cost is the focus of this lesson. Max tokens caps how long the reply can be. Multiply the reply length by the price per 1000 tokens to see what one answer costs — this is how you keep an assistant inside a monthly budget. The task asks you to apply that idea in a small example: What does max tokens limit. Before you run the code, predict what should happen. Then Inspect the printed output and the values your program uses and compare it with your prediction. If the result differs, change one relevant line and run it again. Testing one change at a time makes the cause of a result easier to understand.
